After World War II, there was a belief that Germany was on the brink of a technological breakthrough that could have altered the war's outcome. However, this notion was unfounded. The closest thing to a "Wunderwaffe" or "wonder-weapon" during the war was arguably the US atomic bomb.

The Messerschmitt Me 262 provided Germany with a tactical edge but could not resolve the Luftwaffe's persistent material shortages. German "Wunderwaffe" were often complex and mostly served as propaganda to boost morale as the war turned against them. Here are five "Wunderwaffe" from WWII that either entered service or reached prototyping:

1. V-2 Rocket: Over 3,000 V-2 rockets were built. This single-stage ballistic missile targeted London and entered operational service. It was an engineering success but strategically failed, consuming resources that might have been better spent elsewhere.

2. Amerikabomber: Three Messerschmitt Me 26 prototypes were constructed for this long-range strategic bomber aimed at New York City. The project was canceled at the prototype stage due to resource constraints.

3. Messerschmitt Me 262: A total of 1,430 of these fighter jets were produced, marking it as the first operational jet-powered fighter jet to engage in air-to-air combat during the war.

4. Messerschmitt Me 323 Gigant: With 213 units built, this heavy military transport aircraft played a role in operations such as the invasion of Crete in 1941 and supporting North African campaigns.

5. Horten H.IX or Ho 229: This long-range light flying wing bomber did not progress beyond prototyping despite three prototypes being constructed.

These projects illustrate Germany's attempts at creating advanced weaponry during WWII but also highlight their strategic limitations and resource challenges.
