Aer Lingus cabin crew member Sean Hill has transformed from a footballer to a marathon enthusiast within a year. Initially focusing on shorter distances, Hill's journey led him to debut in the Lisbon Marathon in October 2024, finishing with an impressive time of 2:58:28. Three weeks later, he participated in the Dublin Marathon, solidifying his passion for long-distance running.

Hill attributes part of his success to his job as a cabin crew member, which allows him to run in different cities weekly. He has turned iconic locations like LA's Redondo Beach and New York's Brooklyn Bridge into personal running tracks. "Out of all my transatlantic flights," he states, "I’ve only ever skipped a run once, in San Francisco, and that was due to injury."

The discipline required for marathon training parallels Hill’s dedication at work. His regimen includes intervals, tempo runs, long-distance sessions, and a diet rich in carbohydrates. For those interested in marathons, Hill advises maintaining consistency: “Fueling correctly and committing to a routine are essential for a successful race day.”

Reflecting on his favorite marathons, Hill mentions Dublin as his top choice due to familiar streets and local support. He also appreciates New York’s atmosphere where over a million spectators cheer on runners. “New York really stands out,” he says about the city's warm reception towards marathoners.

Looking ahead, Hill plans to set a new personal best in the half marathon and aims for a full triathlon in Ibiza next year.

Marathon travel not only offers the thrill of race day but also immerses runners in local culture. Cities like Lisbon and Rome provide scenic routes alongside opportunities to explore vibrant neighborhoods and landmarks.

For those interested in participating next year, several notable marathons include Lisbon on March 9th; Barcelona on March 16th; New York City on November 2nd; Rome on March 16th; Boston on April 21st; London on April 27th; Paris on April 13th; and Berlin on September 21st.

These events offer runners the chance to combine fitness with travel experiences across some of the world's most exciting destinations.
