A baby boy was born at Miami International Airport on November 12, as his mother went into labor between American Airlines flights. According to 7 News Miami, both the mother and child are recovering well.

The incident occurred in the pre-security area of the American Airlines terminal. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded to a 9-1-1 call shortly after 5 p.m., finding the woman in advanced labor on the terminal floor. Before their arrival, local police, U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents, and airport staff were already assisting her.

Onlookers captured footage of the newborn being held by his mother for the first time, with officers confirming over radio communication that "It's alive, it's alive!"

Paramedics soon arrived and transported both mother and child to a local children's hospital for further examination. Updates on their condition have not yet been reported by local media.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue provided an email statement to People regarding the birth: “Miami-Dade Aviation personnel, Miami-Dade Police and U.S. Customs and Border Protection assisted with helping the patient prior to our arrival,” said MDFR. “MDFR’s Rescue 40 transported one adult patient and a pediatric patient to a local area hospital.”

This event raises questions about citizenship for babies born during flights. If born on a domestic flight, a child's birthplace is recorded where they receive initial hospital care. For international flights over U.S. territory, non-U.S.-citizen parents may have their child granted U.S. citizenship based on 'right of soil citizenship.' However, complexities arise if born over international waters or outside American airspace.
