Hannah Streck Senior SEO manager | The Points Guy

A travel enthusiast recently shared his experience booking a lie-flat business-class flight from New York to London for just 21,000 points. Despite working at The Points Guy for over five years and accumulating a significant number of points, he had never booked such a flight until now. He typically opts for economy to maximize the number of trips he can take each year.

The opportunity arose with Virgin Atlantic Flying Club's new dynamic pricing on award flights, combined with a Chase transfer bonus. This allowed him to book a round-trip business-class flight for 42,000 credit card points plus taxes and fees. "While some Flying Club points rates now skyrocket to 350,000 points each way for Virgin Atlantic's Upper Class (business class), flexible travelers can also score great deals via Flying Club's new Saver fares," he noted.

In late October, sample searches revealed multiple dates in early 2025 offering lie-flat business class seats between New York City's JFK and London's Heathrow Airport for just 29,000 points each way. A Chase transfer bonus further reduced the cost from 58,000 to just 42,000 points round-trip.

Although the taxes and fees were $870 round-trip, this was considered reasonable compared to the potential cash cost of over $3,000. The author emphasized the importance of having credit card points ready to transfer and being flexible with travel dates to take advantage of such deals.

To book these flights, one should use Virgin Atlantic's Reward Seat Checker tool and transfer necessary points before making a reservation on Virgin Atlantic's site. It's advised to check availability before transferring points as transfers are irreversible.

Virgin Atlantic Flying Club is a partner with several major programs that offer transferable currency, including American Express Membership Rewards and Chase Ultimate Rewards.

Despite not planning initially to book this trip, the deal was too good to pass up. The author is excited about his first international lie-flat business-class flight and encourages others to be flexible and prepared with their points stash for similar opportunities.
