The seventh annual Cathay Hackathon concluded successfully in Shenzhen, marking its first expansion into the Greater Bay Area since its inception in 2016. The event, held at Qianhai Kerry Centre on November 16, provided a platform for young innovators from Hong Kong, the Chinese Mainland, and overseas to present their ideas aimed at enhancing Cathay Pacific's services.

This year's hackathon attracted over 1,500 applications from university students worldwide. After a selection process, 74 teams participated in a 24-hour online Development Day. Ten teams advanced to the final round to present their concepts to Cathay's senior management and other judges.

Duncan Chiu, Hong Kong SAR Legislative Council member for the Technology and Innovation functional constituency, attended as Guest of Honour. He stated: “This year, the Cathay Hackathon has expanded into the wider Greater Bay Area for the first time. I see it as more than just a race; it’s a platform for teenagers to fulfill their dreams."

Lawrence Fong, Cathay Director Digital and IT, commented: “In its seventh edition, the Cathay Hackathon made its foray into the wider Greater Bay Area for the first time this year... The ingenuity and resourcefulness on display has been truly inspiring."

Participants explored technologies like machine learning and artificial intelligence while gaining insights into Cathay's operations. Partners such as Alibaba Cloud and Amazon Web Services supported them with resources.

The winning team GingTrip proposed a modular trolley for HK Express flights to automate recycling and waste sorting. Team member Andy Ng expressed gratitude: “It’s great to be back at the Cathay Hackathon... We gained valuable insights into the region’s growing tech landscape."

GingTrip received Business class tickets within Cathay Pacific’s network and 100,000 Asia Miles. They also gained fast-track access to funding from incubation programs and opportunities in Cathay's internship programs.

Cathay continues its commitment to nurturing talent through initiatives like its Digital & IT Summer Internship and Graduate Trainee Programmes.
