The Scandinavian Airlines Systems (SAS) EuroBonus program has achieved a milestone by surpassing 8 million members globally. Launched in 1992, EuroBonus is the largest loyalty program in Scandinavia and has seen significant updates this year as SAS transitioned from Star Alliance to SkyTeam.

Members of the EuroBonus program collectively earn over 30 billion miles annually. Redeeming points for bonus trips remains the most popular use of rewards, followed closely by flight upgrades. The transition to SkyTeam has expanded redemption options across more than 1,000 destinations in 160 countries, with EuroBonus Gold elite status members gaining access to over 750 lounges worldwide.

The eight millionth member joined from Bergen, Norway, and was celebrated with a special event. Aron Backström, SAS Vice President of Product and Loyalty, commented on the achievement: “We are incredibly grateful to have reached 8 million EuroBonus members. This milestone is a testament to the amazing loyalty and engagement of our members.”

EuroBonus has evolved into a comprehensive travel and lifestyle service since its inception over three decades ago. Norway and Sweden account for more than half of its total membership, though nearly one-third reside outside Scandinavia.

A recent trend shows younger travelers between ages 19-39 leading new sign-ups as they seek enriching journeys to less-visited destinations. SAS has responded with new promotions and additional ways to earn miles through partnerships with Scandic hotels and Lunar debit cards.

Backström emphasized the broadening scope of EuroBonus: “For 32 years, we’ve been proud to reward our EuroBonus members' loyalty... To broaden the program, we are continuously adding new partners...”

In related news, Norwegian carrier Norwegian is refreshing its loyalty offering by collaborating with hotel chain Strawberry for a common loyalty currency across Nordic brands.
