United Airlines increases DC-Accra route frequency amid rising demand

United Airlines has increased the frequency of its flights between Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) and Accra Kotoka International Airport (ACC). The service, which was previously three times a week, is now operating daily. This change took effect on October 25 to coincide with the start of the IATA winter season for 2024-2025.

The airline's statement indicates that this adjustment results in a 67% increase in seat availability compared to the previous year. The daily flights will continue until February 17, 2025, after which they will be reduced to six weekly flights for the summer season, excluding Tuesdays eastbound and Wednesdays westbound.

United Airlines claims it provides more one-stop connections from Accra than any other US airline. The flight schedule includes departures from ACC at 11:45 AM and arrivals at IAD at 6:20 AM. In return, flights leave IAD at 6:15 PM and arrive in ACC at 8:55 AM the following day.

According to Cirium data, United will operate 30 flights on this route in November, offering a total of 7,290 seats using Boeing 787-8 aircraft. These planes have an average age of 11.4 years and are configured with various seating options including economy class, Economy Plus, United Premium Plus, and United Polaris business class.

United highlights several features of these aircraft such as large windows and modern LED lighting designed to enhance passenger comfort during transatlantic flights.

In terms of connectivity between Africa and the US, Ethiopian Airlines leads with over 31,000 seats across 106 flights in November. Delta Air Lines follows closely with nearly 30,000 seats on more than a hundred flights. United ranks third with approximately 27,000 seats on its African routes.

While Delta is noted as having the largest number of seats among US carriers on African routes, both Delta and United serve five cities each within Africa.

Looking ahead, United plans to expand its African network by introducing a new route connecting IAD with Dakar (DSS), pending government approval. This service is tentatively scheduled to commence on May 23 next year.
