Alaska Airlines has introduced a new technology for its passengers with the launch of electronic luggage tags. This innovation allows travelers to tag their bags at home and drop them off at airports, offering a more streamlined check-in process. Alaska Airlines is the first in the United States to adopt this device, known as BAGTAG, which is now available for purchase on the airline's website.

The electronic bag tag system works with smartphones that support Near Field Communication (NFC) and Bluetooth 4.0, such as newer models of iPhones and Samsung devices. Passengers can enable this feature through the Alaska Airlines app and use it for travel within the United States, Canada, and Belize on Alaska Airlines flights or those operated by Horizon or SkyWest.

The device boasts several features: it does not require a battery as it uses NFC technology to draw power from a phone only when updating its display; it employs an ePaper display similar to e-ink devices to conserve energy; and it includes a flexible strap for easy attachment to various bags.

Priced at $89, these tags may appeal most to frequent travelers who regularly fly with Alaska Airlines and often check in luggage. For those who travel less frequently or prefer carry-on baggage, the investment might require further consideration.
