On March 11, 2024, the Department of the Air Force presented a $217.5 billion budget proposal for 2025, marking an increase of $2.4 billion from the previous year. This budget is allocated to both the United States Air Force (USAF) and the United States Space Force (USSF), with the USAF receiving $188.1 billion and the USSF $29.4 billion.

The Department of the Air Force outlined plans for this increased funding, including enhancing capabilities, ensuring global strike abilities, modernizing readiness, and improving missile warning systems. The budget also allocates funds for satellite communications integration and next-generation air dominance systems.

Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall emphasized the need for increased funding, stating: “I think the United States of America needs more Air Force." He highlighted that current stresses on the force necessitate additional capabilities to keep pace with a competitive global landscape.

Under Secretary Kristyn Jones reaffirmed that "The Air Force's core functions remain unchanged," while noting that "The Space Force's efforts reflect... its continued transformation into a warfighting service."

With Congress yet to approve this budget, delays could impact military readiness and procurement of necessary equipment like Boeing–Saab T-7 Red Hawk trainers and Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II aircraft.

Established in 1947 as an independent branch, the USAF is responsible for various missions including air supremacy and global mobility. As of 2020, it operates around 5,500 aircraft and maintains numerous Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles across several bases.

The USSF became a separate branch in December 2019 with a mission to defend space assets. It operates under USAF jurisdiction with over 14,000 Guardians stationed globally.
