United Airlines has introduced a new payment method for in-flight snacks and drinks, offering passengers a more streamlined experience. The airline now allows single-tap payments via Tap to Pay on iPhone, enabling contactless transactions for onboard purchases. This update was initially communicated through an internal memo to flight attendants before being confirmed by the airline.

Passengers can use a valid contactless credit or debit card, including those with wireless chips and digital wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay, to make purchases. United's flight attendants are equipped with iPhones to facilitate this new payment option. Apple had launched Tap to Pay on iPhone in 2022, and United has now adopted this feature two years later.

According to United, "this new technology is available immediately across all mainline aircraft." Despite the introduction of this modern payment method, Premier 1K elite members will continue receiving one complimentary snack and drink when seated in economy class.

Additionally, customers using a MileagePlus credit card for onboard food, beverages, and Wi-Fi will receive a 25% rebate on their next statement after travel.

In recent years, United Airlines has been at the forefront of technological advancements among major U.S. airlines. However, its previous onboard payment system required passengers to store payment methods in the United app or on united.com before flying. The introduction of contactless payments represents a significant improvement for many travelers.

While American Airlines and Delta Air Lines have already implemented similar contactless payment options during flights, United's latest move is seen as catching up with these competitors.

Passengers can view the onboard menu before their flight via the flight status page and preorder snacks or drinks up to 24 hours before departure using the United app or the "manage trips" feature.
