An American Airlines Boeing 787 Dreamliner encountered moderate to severe turbulence on November 15, 2024, resulting in injuries to two cabin crew members. The incident occurred during flight AA168 from Tokyo Haneda International Airport to New York John F. Kennedy International Airport. The extent of the injuries remains unknown, and American Airlines has been contacted for comment.

The aircraft, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner registered as N833AA, was nearly full with 279 passengers and 14 crew members on board. Despite the turbulence near Tokyo early in the flight, the crew continued to their destination.

Turbulence incidents have been rising, with significant events reported this year. In May 2024, a Singapore Airlines flight from London to Singapore experienced severe turbulence resulting in one fatality and injuries to 104 passengers. Another incident occurred in July 2024 on an Air Europa flight between Madrid and Uruguay, injuring 30 people due to turbulence.

Clear-air turbulence poses challenges as it lacks visual indicators like clouds and occurs when air masses move at different speeds. Reports indicate that clear-air turbulence cases over the United States and North Atlantic Ocean increased by 55% between 1979 and 2020. Scientists predict that by 2050, severe clear-air turbulence could double due to climate change affecting weather patterns.

Experts suggest improving turbulence forecasting and reducing aviation emissions through methods such as computer simulations of Earth's atmosphere.
