Scaled Composites, a subsidiary of Northrop Grumman, has successfully conducted the first flight of its new Model 437 on August 29, 2024. This aircraft stands out as it is both autonomous and can be piloted. The development raises questions about the future of manned fighter jets in the United States Air Force, especially as the Air Force considers reducing reliance on the expensive sixth-generation NGAD fighter program.

The Air Force's interest in Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCAs), or loyal wingman drones, reflects a shift towards integrating more autonomous systems. The service plans to acquire around 1,000 CCAs, pairing two autonomous aircraft with each manned fighter. This strategy may influence their reconsideration of investments in traditional manned platforms.

Alex Hollings from Sandboxx News commented on the advantages of having a pilot: "Put simply, it's just a lot easier to test an aircraft with a person actually piloting it." However, incorporating a cockpit can increase aircraft size and cost due to space limitations for other systems.

Despite advances in autonomy, complex missions still benefit from human pilots. Consequently, even strategic bombers like the B-21 Raider are designed to be optionally manned. Northrop Grumman's Model 437 aims to enhance airpower by developing an affordable and versatile aircraft capable of operating autonomously or with a pilot.

Northrop Grumman highlights digital engineering's role in speeding up development while reducing costs. Their approach reportedly decreased design-to-production changes from 15-20% to just 1%. They state that "Northrop Grumman's fully digital engineering ecosystem reduces engineering rework, accelerates schedule, and saves costs for customers on future aircraft programs."

The Model 437 is expected to cost $5-6 million per unit due to these efficiencies and the use of 3D-printed components. This is significantly lower than similar non-stealthy models like the MQ-9 Reaper which costs approximately $30 million each.

Scaled Composites leveraged its expertise in rapid design and testing processes for this project. They noted that they utilized "a clean sheet aircraft design" among other methodologies to quickly bring this model from concept to reality.
