Alaska Airlines has launched an updated version of its electronic bag tags, available for purchase now. The new tags allow travelers to tag their luggage from home, reducing the time spent in airport lines.

After two years since the initial launch of the Electronic Bag Tag program, Alaska Airlines has enhanced the technology based on feedback from internal testers and Mileage Plan elites. "Creating a premium guest experience is important to us," the airline stated, emphasizing their commitment to streamlining the airport experience.

The updated electronic bag tags feature improvements such as app experience updates, a new strap design, and dedicated support. Notably, these tags do not require batteries or separate charging as they are powered through NFC signals on phones.

The tags are usable on Alaska Airlines flights operated by Horizon and SkyWest across the United States, Canada, and Belize. They can also be used with partner airlines Icelandair and Qatar Airways. The airline plans to expand eligibility to more countries soon.

Feedback over the past 18 months led to significant changes. A more flexible buckle-type strap replaces the original rigid key-based model for easier handling while maintaining secure attachment during travel. Current users of older straps can request complimentary replacements at alaskaair.BagTag.com.

To simplify activation via the Alaska Airlines app, improved on-screen instructions have been introduced along with a dedicated support desk for assistance with any issues related to the tags.

A new blank setting was added for users who wish to keep their tags attached even when flying on ineligible flights, allowing easy screen clearing post-travel.

Electronic bag tags are priced at $89 each.
