If you are planning a trip to the Maldives, be prepared for increased travel costs starting December 1. The Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) announced that foreign travelers will face higher airport taxes and fees when departing from the South Asian archipelago. These increases will range from $40 to $720, depending on the class of travel.

The departure tax was initially introduced in 2022 after an amendment to the Airport Taxes and Fees Act replaced a previous $25 airport service charge. This tax applies to all passengers, including locals, leaving any Maldivian airport. Local residents flying economy will continue paying the same $12 fee established in 2022. However, foreigners and those traveling in premium classes will see significant increases.

From December 1 onward, MIRA outlines the new departure tax rates as follows:

- Economy: Maldivians pay $12; foreigners pay $50 (up from $30).

- Business: Both Maldivians and foreigners pay $120 (up from $60).

- First Class: Both groups pay $240 (up from $90).

- Private Charters: Both groups pay $480 (up from $120).

Exemptions apply for diplomats, transit passengers not leaving the airport, and children under two years old.

In addition to the departure tax, an airport development fee will also be charged at Velana International Airport (MLE), matching the rates above. Unlike the departure tax, only diplomats and direct transit flight passengers are exempt from this fee.

Starting December 1, foreign passengers departing MLE will face combined fees totaling:

- Economy: $100 (up from $60)

- Business: $240 (up from $120)

- First Class: $480 (up from $180)

- Private Charters: $960 (up from $240)

These fees apply to both cash and award bookings made on or after December 1. Airlines like Etihad Airlines and Beond have advised booking before November 30 to avoid these increased charges.

Further cost increases are expected in 2025 with changes to tourism-related taxes. On January 1, Green Tax rates will double at most hotels and resorts. By July 1, the Goods and Services Tax rate will rise to 17%, affecting various services across the Maldives.
