SWISS International Air Lines, along with its sister airlines in the Lufthansa Group, will extend its Green Fares to all long-haul flights starting December 4, 2024. The Green Fare includes a component for offsetting carbon emissions from air travel. This initiative is part of SWISS's efforts to promote sustainable air travel.

By choosing a Green Fare for long-haul flights, customers can reduce their carbon emissions by 10% using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The remaining 90% of emissions will be offset through contributions to climate protection projects. For European and North African routes, the current mechanism remains: 20% reduction via SAF and 80% offset through climate projects. The Zurich-Los Angeles route has seen notable success with this option, with six percent of travelers opting for it.

Jens Fehlinger, CEO of SWISS, stated: “Our company has set itself ambitious objectives for making air travel more sustainable. And we’re adopting a range of measures to achieve them, including investments in new aircraft and innovative technologies. Extending our Green Fares to all our long-haul services is a major step on this path."

The Green Fares also offer benefits like free rebooking and extra Miles & More miles. Customers can use these miles to further reduce carbon emissions or enhance their travel experience.

Since August 2022, when SWISS introduced Green Fares on short-haul routes, the product has expanded significantly. On domestic services, it is now the only fare available. In 2023 alone, SWISS avoided approximately 5,400 tonnes of CO₂ emissions through SAF use and offset an additional 48,500 tonnes via climate projects.

Sustainable aviation fuel is key in reducing carbon emissions but is currently limited in availability. SWISS supports the development and production expansion of SAF as part of its commitment to sustainability.

Both business and leisure travelers have options to offset their flight-related carbon emissions through various products offered by SWISS and the Lufthansa Group.
