Starting January 2025, travelers to the United Kingdom will need a new electronic travel authorization (ETA) to enter the country. This requirement applies to all visitors who can travel visa-free, including Americans, regardless of age. The program was initially launched in 2024 for visitors from Gulf Cooperation Council states.

From January 8, 2025, the ETA program will extend to travelers from the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, and others. The requirement will expand to the rest of the EU in April 2025, with applications opening in March.

Applications for Americans and other nationalities began on November 27, 2024. The application fee is £10 ($13), and it is valid for multiple visits up to six months over two years. Travelers must apply online before traveling and upload a photo. According to U.K. officials, clearance may take up to three business days.

The U.K. government website offers an application portal; alternatively, applications can be submitted via a mobile app available on iOS and Android devices.

"ETAs will be a requirement worldwide for visitors who do not need a visa for short stays," stated the Home Office earlier this year. "Visitors from Europe and other nations such as America and Australia do not currently need to make any form of application to visit the U.K. However, this will be changing with the introduction of ETAs."

Although an ETA is not a visa, Europeans and other visa-free travelers will still need one to cross into the U.K., maintaining their visa-free status otherwise. This system resembles the ESTA required for non-U.S. citizens visiting the United States.

The British electronic travel authorization program is set to commence on January 8, 2025.
