The 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence commenced on November 25, coinciding with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. This year, UNI Global Union is spotlighting occupational health and safety policies from a gender perspective to foster workplaces devoid of discrimination and violence. The focus is particularly on issues surrounding menstruation, maternity, and menopause.

Veronica Fernandez Mendez, Head of Equal Opportunities at UNI Global Union, stated: “Menstruation, maternity and menopause affect half of the world’s population. When these natural processes are weaponized through stigma, discrimination and inadequate support, they undermine gender equality and contribute to gender-based violence. Addressing these issues requires comprehensive policies, education and a cultural shift towards greater inclusivity and respect for our experiences.”

UNI is advocating for the ratification and implementation of ILO Convention 190 (C190) and Recommendation 206 (R206). The organization is also equipping trade unionists with manuals designed to promote better workplace policies.

The Menstruation Manual seeks to dispel myths about menstruation in the workplace. It highlights challenges such as inadequate sanitation access and ongoing stigma that exacerbate health conditions like endometriosis. The manual offers guidelines for supporting menstruating workers by negotiating menstrual leave policies.

The Maternity Manual addresses systemic inequalities faced by pregnant and breastfeeding women in the workplace. It provides guidance on implementing maternity protection measures like safe working conditions and paid leave while emphasizing collective bargaining for securing rights related to surrogacy, adoption, and care crises.

Lastly, the Menopause Manual explores changes associated with menopause that impact women at work. It suggests frameworks for supporting menopausal workers through risk assessments and flexible working arrangements.

UNI encourages participation in this campaign through social media using #16Days.
