Air Canada is advancing its Digital Identification program to include nearly all domestic flights departing from Vancouver International Airport starting December 3, 2024. This initiative makes Air Canada the first Canadian airline to implement this technology broadly after a successful trial run.

The Digital ID program utilizes face recognition technology to streamline the boarding process. This development complements Air Canada's existing digital services, such as Aeroplan account access, baggage tracking, and real-time flight updates.

Tom Stevens, Vice President of Canadian Airports and Customer Experience Strategy at Air Canada, highlighted the significance of this advancement: "We are thrilled to take a leadership position with the Vancouver Airport Authority in using technology to simplify and transform boarding of almost all our YVR-departing domestic flights. Digital identification is readily used to streamline numerous daily activities including unlocking phones and entering workplaces, and bringing this technology to the gate enhances the travel experience, making boarding flights convenient and effortless. The feedback from customers, notably our frequent flyers, during the pilot phase was very positive. We look forward to expanding this technology to additional airports."

Participation in the Digital Identification initiative is voluntary. Passengers can register through the Air Canada app and use face recognition at the gate instead of traditional identification methods. This system aims to reduce wait times by allowing faster boarding.

Air Canada assures that customer security remains a priority. Participation requires traveler consent, ensuring personal information is protected. Biometric data is controlled by passengers and not shared without approval.

The success at Vancouver has prompted plans for further expansion at other Canadian airports. The airline also considers applying Digital ID for additional processes like security checks and lounge access at various locations including Toronto Pearson International Airport, Calgary International Airport, and San Francisco International Airport.
