Naples Airport is preparing for a significant expansion of its long-haul network in the summer of 2025, with new international routes to North America. The airport will offer 43 weekly flights to six destinations across the continent, marking a record-breaking period for its operations. American Airlines and Delta Air Lines are launching new routes to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Chicago O'Hare International Airport, respectively. These additions complement United Airlines' double-daily service to Newark and Air Canada's new flights from Montreal.

Margherita Chiaramonte, Naples Airport’s Aviation Business Development Director, highlighted the success of summer 2024, noting an "increasingly intercontinental focus" with high load factors that set the stage for further connectivity increases next year. She remarked on the strong dynamism of the U.S. market due to newly launched flights by American Airlines and Delta Air Lines.

In 2025, Naples' North American network will expand significantly from three destinations in 2024—Newark, Philadelphia, and New York—to seven destinations including Chicago and Montreal. This growth represents more than a 50% increase in flights and seats compared to last year.

Chiaramonte emphasized that "long-haul routes are crucial for Naples and the entire Campania region," citing their impact on economic development through tourism. Airports Council International notes that increased connectivity can lead to regional GDP growth due to tourism and foreign investments.

Despite concerns about demand sustainability, Chiaramonte stated that new routes would not cannibalize existing ones but rather complement them by providing more options for travelers. She also pointed out that these expansions are based on thorough market analysis identifying strong growth potential.

The airport's contribution to regional GDP stands at 4.2%, generating over 112,000 jobs directly and indirectly. Roberto Barbieri, CEO of GESAC—the airport operator—sees high-spending tourists as an opportunity for extraordinary regional development.

Additionally, recent developments like the ITA Airways-Lufthansa merger could benefit Naples by integrating it into broader networks within Europe and beyond. This integration is expected to enhance connectivity while attracting premium travelers.

As European carriers face increasing competition from North American airlines expanding into secondary markets like Naples, questions remain about their ability to compete effectively in this evolving landscape.
