Atlanta Police have apprehended a man accused of attempting to steal three cars within 24 hours at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Jaquavious Crenshaw, was arrested on November 25th at the airport's Rental Car Center.

According to Fox 5 Atlanta, Crenshaw is believed to have stolen two vehicles—a Kia Sorento and Forte—prior to his arrest. These models are known for being vulnerable due to an exploit in their steering columns. Crenshaw also attempted to steal an Audi A6 sedan but was thwarted by a security barrier.

In body camera footage from the arrest, an officer questions Crenshaw about a security photo taken the previous day. During questioning, Crenshaw acknowledges that he is indeed the person depicted in the image.

Crenshaw has been charged with two counts of theft by taking, prowling, and entering an automobile. He has a history of similar offenses, having been arrested twice before for grand theft auto, including one incident at the same rental car center in 2022.

Car thefts have become increasingly common at airports like ATL due to unattended vehicles left for long periods. This year alone, over 300 vehicles have been reported stolen from airport premises—a significant increase from last year's figure of 95.

Atlanta Police Major Kelly Collier commented on the rise in auto thefts: "At the beginning of the year, we saw an increase in auto thefts. We have over 35,000 parking spaces at the airport."

The police have noted that thieves often use technology to recreate vehicle key fobs quickly and tailgate other drivers out of parking areas without paying.

To address this issue, Atlanta City Council member Michael J. Bond mentioned ongoing enhancements: "They’re full-time police officers working part-time at the airport. Also, there's ongoing enhancements to the video monitoring system at the airport."

Measures being implemented include anti-tailgating equipment and increased security cameras. Additionally, time limits for free parking have been reduced to 15 minutes with extra security patrols planned.
