Cathay Cargo Terminal has become the first air cargo terminal in Hong Kong to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) with its existing CCTV infrastructure. This development aims to enhance safety and security monitoring across its terminal buildings.

The terminal partnered with Intenseye, a company specializing in AI-powered workplace safety solutions. Together, they use advanced computer vision and AI algorithms to monitor safety and security hazards in real-time. The goal is to mitigate potential incidents and improve workplace safety.

The technology utilizes the existing CCTV network to identify potential workplace hazards such as lack of safety equipment, vehicles or equipment moving too close to workers, and individuals not adhering to pedestrian walkways or work-at-height protocols. It can also detect intrusions and other specific scenarios relevant to the terminal.

In addition to optimizing key modules of the Intenseye solution for a cargo environment, Cathay Cargo Terminal and Intenseye have developed unique features like real-time alerts for unattended shipments at truck docks.

The Intenseye solution adheres to Ethical UI principles, incorporating privacy protections while focusing on identifying potentially hazardous situations.

Cathay Cargo Terminal's commitment to safety was recently acknowledged with five awards at the Hong Kong Occupational Safety and Health Awards, including a Gold Award for Safety Management System.

Chief Operating Officer Mark Watts emphasized their dedication: “We take safety and security extremely seriously. We see AI as an important tool to enhance and augment our existing safety management system, to help ‘see the unseen’, and to further strengthen hazard reporting and leading safety indicators as we strive to ensure a zero-harm workplace.”

Intenseye CEO Sercan Esen expressed enthusiasm about this collaboration: “It’s exciting to see Cathay Cargo Terminal lead the way as the first cargo terminal to adopt our technology, tailored specifically to their needs. Our focus has always been on helping companies create safer environments, and it’s great to see the real-world impact of these new features in improving day-to-day safety and efficiency.”

Additionally, Cathay Cargo Terminal is installing AI on all X-ray machines at the terminal as part of its Enhanced Lithium Screening program. There are plans to introduce AI into its Thermal Imaging program in 2025.

Tom Owen, Cathay Director Cargo and Chair of Cathay Cargo Terminal, remarked: “With this new AI technology, we are setting new standards in both safety and digital excellence for cargo terminal operators.”
