The United Kingdom has imposed sanctions on Iran's national airline, Iran Air, and the state-owned shipping carrier, the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL). These measures are a response to Iran's transfer of ballistic missiles and military supplies to Russia for its war against Ukraine.

Foreign Secretary David Lammy commented on the decision: "Iran’s attempts to undermine global security are dangerous and unacceptable. Alongside our international partners, we were clear that any transfer of ballistic missiles from Iran to Russia would face a significant response."

Lammy further emphasized the UK's stance by saying: "That’s why today we are sanctioning Iran Air and the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines in response to Iran’s deliveries of ballistic missiles to Russia." He reiterated the call for Iran to cease its support for what he termed as "Russia’s illegal war in Ukraine," adding that the UK will stand with Ukraine "for as long as it takes."

These new sanctions against Iran Air extend previous measures taken by the UK, alongside the US, Germany, France, and the European Union. The airline is already banned from operating in EU airports and faces additional restrictions on flying through European airspace.

In September, the UK canceled its bilateral air services agreement with Iran and amended its sanctions regime to target materials used in producing ballistic missiles, UAVs, and other weaponry.

Iran Air currently operates an aging Airbus fleet according to Planespotters.net.
