Air Canada is set to introduce a new fee for larger carry-on luggage on its basic fare tickets, starting January 3, 2025. This change aligns with similar policies by other Canadian airlines. Passengers can still bring one small personal item onboard, but larger items like roller bags and big backpacks must be checked before security. Standard fees are $35 for the first bag and $50 for the second. If passengers arrive at the boarding gate with ineligible carry-on items, they will incur a $65 fee per item.

The airline has clarified that accessibility items such as mobility aids, wheelchairs, medical devices, and child strollers are exempt from these charges. Status members, Star Alliance Gold members, and Aeroplan premium credit cardholders will maintain their allowance for one carry-on bag along with all existing benefits.

Transport Minister Anita Anand expressed concern about this new fee policy via social media. Additionally, Air Canada will update seating rules for basic fare tickets starting January 21, 2025. Passengers wishing to change their seat from the one assigned at check-in will need to pay a fee unless they fall under specific exemptions such as families or those requiring an assistant.

In another development, Air Canada's comfort fare policy is changing to allow two complimentary checked bags for customers traveling worldwide who purchase tickets from January 3, 2025. This is an increase from the current allowance of one checked bag.

United Airlines has a similar structure in place for its Basic Economy fares where carry-on bags must be checked unless certain criteria are met. Fees start at $35 if checked before airport security and rise to $65 if brought to the gate without prior checking.

These changes reflect a broader trend among airlines to adjust baggage policies.
