Virgin Australia has announced a new partnership with Air New Zealand, marking a significant step in its strategic alliance efforts. The two airlines have entered into a codeshare agreement that allows travelers to book Virgin Australia flights operated by Air New Zealand to Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch. This service will be available from December 9, 2024.
The partnership follows Virgin Australia's restructuring after its collapse in April 2021 when it faced debts of AU$7 billion. Bain Capital acquired the airline in September 2020, appointing Jayne Hrdlicka as CEO. Under her leadership, Virgin Australia refocused on domestic and short-haul international routes.
Virgin Australia's Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer Alistair Hartley commented on the new partnership: "This codeshare agreement isn't just about flights - it's about creating seamless travel experiences that give Virgin Australia customers more ways to explore, connect and adventure."
