American Airlines has confirmed that Citigroup will become the exclusive issuer of its AAdvantage credit cards in 2026. This decision concludes a period of speculation regarding the future of the airline's loyalty program card portfolio, which had been split between Citi and Barclays since American Airlines' merger with US Airways.

Citi and American Airlines have extended their partnership for another decade, building on a relationship that began 37 years ago. The collaboration aims to "create significant value" for both AAdvantage cobranded credit cardholders and those using Citi's travel card.

In an agreement with Barclays, Citi will acquire the Aviator cards portfolio. American Airlines CEO Robert Isom expressed satisfaction with this development: “American is proud to have launched the first airline loyalty program, and with Citi, the travel industry’s first co-branded credit card."

He added, “The strength of our relationship with Citi has enabled us to deliver first-class products and customer service to millions of AAdvantage cardmembers. This expanded partnership will unlock even more value and exciting new benefits for all of our customers in the future.”

Until 2026, current holders of Aviator Red cards and other Barclays-issued cards will continue enjoying their existing benefits. More details about transitioning these card members to Citi's portfolio are expected "in the coming months," according to Citigroup.

This transition marks the end of an arrangement where both Barclays and Citi issued cobranded cards through different channels. As part of this new deal, Citi will take over all remaining acquisition channels for American Airlines' credit cards, including inflight sales and airport promotions.

Citi CEO Jane Fraser commented on the finalized deal: “American Airlines and Citi have built something truly special together — a partnership rooted in delivering excellence to our customers." She further stated that they are eager "to take this relationship to greater heights through an expanded customer base and a series of new loyalty and reward offerings."

The acquisition is also expected to align AAdvantage with Citi's Thank You rewards points program. While specifics on how existing Barclays cardholders will be transitioned remain unconfirmed, there are parallels between both issuers' portfolios in terms of annual fees and types of available cards.

As American Airlines anticipates operating over two million flights in 2024, providing more than 275 million seats, this strengthened partnership with Citi reflects its strategic efforts to enhance customer experience through improved loyalty programs.
