Portuguese airline TAP Air Portugal has announced the addition of three new seasonal routes to the United States, marking a significant expansion in its transatlantic operations. The new routes will connect Boston to Porto, Los Angeles to Lisbon, and San Francisco to Terceira in the Azores. This expansion will bring TAP's service next summer to eight US airports across eleven routes.

Carlos Antunes, TAP Air Portugal's Director for the Americas, explained that this move is part of a strategic growth plan. "This is the continued expansion of our footprint in the US in North America," he stated. The decision comes as TAP prepares for its 80th anniversary next year and aims to tap into high-demand areas with these new connections.

The Boston-Porto route is set to begin on May 14th, 2025, using an Airbus A321LR aircraft with 168 seats. It will operate four times weekly until October 25th. Antunes highlighted the demand from Boston's Portuguese community: "There's a strong, vibrant, participating Portuguese community in the region of Boston."

TAP's Los Angeles-Lisbon route will start on May 16th and become one of its longest nonstop services. Initially operating three times a week before adding a fourth frequency later in May, it seeks to capture traffic from Lisbon’s largest unserved long-haul market. Antunes noted that Los Angeles presents both incoming and outgoing passenger opportunities: "Los Angeles is also an attraction."

Another notable addition is the San Francisco-Terceira route in the Azores archipelago, last served by TAP in 1990. The flight aims to cater to California’s large Azorean community and provide connections throughout Europe and Africa via Lisbon.

Antunes expressed optimism about these developments: "We're very excited because every indicator we have right now tells us that these routes are going to be a success." He emphasized that expanding beyond Lisbon helps meet demand for Northern Portugal and Northern Spain.

TAP Air Portugal already serves several other US cities including Miami, Chicago ORD, New York JFK, Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), San Francisco International Airport (SFO), and Washington Dulles.
