United Airlines has resumed its seasonal service between San Francisco and Christchurch, New Zealand. This move comes as airlines seek new markets amid lower travel levels between China and the US. The route, which first launched last year, saw its inaugural flight of the season land in Christchurch on December 6, 2024.

The service operates three times weekly using a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. Last year's launch increased visitors to New Zealand's South Island by nearly 80%. United Airlines Regional Manager Tim Wallis expressed enthusiasm for the route's return: "After a solid first season last year we are delighted to return this seasonal service to Christchurch, and we are excited to continue that airbridge between the United States and the South Island."

Christchurch Airport attributes the route's success to tourism, Antarctic operations, and exports. The nonstop flights align with peak tourist seasons and support travel for scientists involved in Antarctic research. They also facilitate trade, providing cargo space for New Zealand exports like kiwifruit and meat.

Justin Watson, CEO of Christchurch Airport, described the service as transformative: "This route showcases the demand for travel and trade, and we look forward to another promising season ahead." The connection offers travelers access to numerous destinations across both regions.
