Delta Air Lines has launched a new 50,000-square-foot pilot training center near its hub at Salt Lake City Airport (SLC). This development marks Delta's first major training facility investment outside its Atlanta headquarters, where the initial pilot training facility was established in 1968.

The new facility aims to enhance "pilot training capacity and provide a closer, more convenient location for pilots in Delta's western hubs," while also benefiting the local economy. John Laughter, E.V.P. and Chief of Operations at Delta, stated: "This 50,000-square-foot training center is really about the future. There's a great opportunity to improve not only great quality of training, but quality of life, too, and have our pilots have a really great training center to come to here."

Designed to host over 1,000 monthly training events, the facility includes four high-ceiling bays for full-motion simulators, four procedure trainers for qualification training, seven classrooms, ten briefing rooms, and an emergency equipment training area. Additionally, Delta maintains facilities for flight attendant training at SLC.

Delta is reinforcing its regional presence through this investment at Salt Lake City Airport. The airline claims it operates more flights than all other carriers combined from SLC with 240 peak-day flights serving nearly 90 global destinations. These destinations include major European cities such as Amsterdam (AMS), London Heathrow (LHR), Paris (CDG), and a newly announced nonstop route to Seoul (ICN) starting June 12, 2025.

SLC airport features 50 gates dedicated to Delta flights. The airline plans to expand further by opening additional gates by 2027.

Following a slowdown in hiring due to post-pandemic adjustments in demand for pilots in 2024, Delta anticipates resuming normal hiring levels by 2025. Airline leadership expects nearly 5,000 pilots will be hired in that year according to their third-quarter earnings call.

According to Boeing's 2024 Pilot and Technician Outlook (PTO), the aviation industry will require approximately 2.4 million new commercial pilots, technicians, and cabin crew members through 2043.
