The Global Eagle Exercise, a multinational military training event, took place in Florida from November 12 to 15, 2024. It involved air force units from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Norway. The exercise aimed to enhance interoperability and readiness among the participating forces.

The exercise is significant due to its timing amidst geopolitical tensions in Europe. With Russia's ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Norway has emerged as a crucial energy supplier for Europe, replacing Russia as a primary source of natural gas. This situation underscores the need for robust security measures to protect critical energy infrastructure.

"The core mission of base defense squadrons is to defend an airfield from its original seizure to the arrival of follow-on forces," stated the US Air Force. During the exercise, participants engaged in various training activities including counter-improvised explosive device procedures and tactical combat casualty care.

Norway's strategic energy supply system consists of an extensive network of pipelines that connect it with several European countries. Given its importance, there have been concerns about potential threats from Russia, including drone sightings near Norwegian offshore gas platforms.

In response to these threats, Norway has increased military patrols around its offshore facilities and stationed soldiers at refineries. The Global Eagle Exercise included contributions from various units such as the US Army’s 2nd Battalion and support aviation battalions using Black Hawk helicopters for simulated missions.

The Norwegian parliament has also granted access to 12 military bases for US operations, allowing rapid deployment capabilities in case of emergencies. This move aligns with broader efforts by NATO allies to bolster defenses against possible Russian aggression.

Overall, the Global Eagle Exercise highlights ongoing efforts by NATO members to ensure security and stability in Europe amid evolving threats.
