The United States Department of Defense has awarded Boeing a $451 million contract to upgrade Japan's F-15J fighter jets. The work, supported by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, will be conducted locally in Japan. This project involves the modernization of approximately 70 out of 200 Japanese F-15s, bringing them up to the "Japanese Super Interceptor" standard.

The Department of Defense specified that "The Boeing Co., St. Louis, Missouri, was awarded a $450,500,000 undefinitized contract action for the F-15 Japan Super Interceptor Program requirement to incorporate C2 production Lot One. This contract provides for the acquisition of radars, self-protection systems, and mission computer units." Completion is expected by February 2030.

Japan's Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency emphasized the importance of these upgrades: "critical for the country's security." Key elements include Raytheon's APG-82(V)1 radar and BAE Systems' AN/ALQ-250 Eagle Passive Warning Survivability System.

Historically, Japan has produced US fighter jets under license rather than developing its own designs. Currently assembling F-35A jets domestically and participating in international collaborations like the Global Combat Air Programme with the UK and Italy, Japan's approach to military aircraft production may evolve.

"In Japan," Mitsubishi Heavy Industries explained about their role with the F-15J model, "it was adopted by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) as the main fighter aircraft... manufactured under license as the F-15J."
