American Airlines is considering whether to refurbish or replace its Boeing 777-200ER aircraft, according to CEO Robert Isom. The airline operates 47 of these long-haul jets, which are integral to its international operations. With an average age of nearly 24 years, these planes are among the older members of American's fleet.

Isom discussed this decision at the Skift Aviation Forum in Dallas on November 12. He said, "The 777-200 is something we're talking about right now." He added, "Is that an aircraft that we're going to go ahead and invest in — remod the interiors, upgrade those? Or is it something you take a look at for potential replacement in the future?"

The airline has a clear plan for its other long-haul jets. Its newer Boeing 777-300ERs will undergo interior upgrades starting in 2025. American also plans to introduce new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners and Airbus A321XLRs with enhanced business suites.

Despite facing competition from Delta Air Lines and United Airlines, American maintains a younger fleet overall. This includes upcoming deliveries of new single-aisle jets and additional Dreamliners.

Isom expressed optimism about the incoming Dreamliners' impact over the next decade but noted discussions with Airbus as well: "Of course, we're talking to Airbus as we need to."

As American Airlines weighs its options for the aging 777-200ERs, factors such as existing business-class configurations and potential upgrades will influence their decision-making process.
