To experience New Year's Eve in Iceland like a local, start the evening with a special meal and then head to the nearest bonfire around 8:30 p.m. As the night progresses, fireworks begin to light up the sky, with a pause at 10:30 p.m. when the nation tunes into "Áramótaskaupið," a satirical TV show reviewing the year's events. This program is available worldwide with English subtitles via RÚV TV online.

At midnight, over 500 tons of fireworks illuminate the skies in a vibrant display. The local Search and Rescue teams sell these fireworks as part of their fundraising efforts, leading to significant purchases by Icelanders.

For an excellent view of the spectacle, locals suggest watching from Öskjuhlíð hill or near Hallgrímskirkja.
