United Airlines and Air Canada have adopted Apple's new Share Item Location feature, which aims to expedite the process of locating lost checked bags. This feature, part of iOS 18.2 released on Wednesday, allows travelers to share their AirTag location with airlines when items are misplaced.

The integration enables United and Air Canada to use a live tracking link for quicker recovery of lost or delayed luggage. In case of mishandling, passengers can generate a link through the Find My app on their Apple devices and share it directly with the airline.

"Now, Apple's new Share Item Location feature will help customers travel with even more confidence, knowing they have another way to access their bag's precise location with AirTag or their Find My accessory of choice. They can easily and securely share that with us in the United app, and our team can use the location information to find the bag and get it reunited with its owner much more quickly," stated David Kinzelman, United's chief customer officer.

The location sharing automatically ends once the traveler is reunited with their bag but can be stopped at any time by the user. The link expires after seven days. The process ensures end-to-end encryption and anonymity, preventing any third party from accessing an item's location or data.

Apple plans to extend this partnership to 16 other airlines including Aer Lingus, British Airways, Delta Air Lines, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, among others. More airlines will be included over time according to Apple.
