Condor, a German airline headquartered in Hesse, has undergone significant transformations since its inception. Originally established in 1955 as Deutsche Flugdienst GmbH, the airline began operations with Vickers VC.1 Viking aircraft targeting vacation travelers. In 1961, it merged with Condor Luftreederei and adopted the name Condor Flugdienst GmbH, commonly known today as Condor Airlines.

By the mid-1960s, Condor had secured a substantial share of the German leisure travel market and expanded to long-haul destinations. In the 1990s, it became part of C&N Touristik and later saw Lufthansa sell its stake to Thomas Cook AG by 2000.

The mid-2010s saw Condor as a crucial component of the Thomas Cook Airline Group until its bankruptcy in 2019 placed Condor at risk. The German government intervened with emergency support, allowing British investment firm Attestor Capital to manage and revitalize the airline into its current form.

Condor now operates a hybrid business model that bridges legacy airlines and low-cost carriers. It offers integrated long-, medium-, and short-haul services primarily for leisure travelers. Despite not being classified strictly as a low-cost or legacy carrier, it provides unique offerings like partnerships with Alaska Mileage Plan and Emirates Skywards for loyalty benefits without maintaining its own program infrastructure.

"While defining exactly the kind of business model that Condor operates can be a little difficult," it's clear that "Condor is not a legacy airline," lacking traditional hub-and-spoke networks common among such carriers.

Operating from eight bases across Europe—Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER), Düsseldorf Airport (DUF), Frankfurt Airport (FRA), Hamburg Airport (HAM), Leipzig/Halle Airport (LEJ), Munich Airport (MUC), Stuttgart Airport (STR), Zurich Airport (ZRH)—the airline avoids centralizing traffic through singular hubs typical of legacy airlines like Lufthansa.

Unlike many budget airlines focusing on fleet uniformity, Condor utilizes multiple aircraft models and offers both economy and business class cabins with lie-flat seats on long-haul flights—a feature distinguishing it from typical low-cost carriers like Ryanair or easyJet.

Condor's long-haul business class caters to high-end leisure travelers rather than emulating premium cabins found in other low-cost airlines lacking lie-flat seating options.

Ultimately, "the best way to classify Condor is as an airline that sits mostly in a category of its own," blending elements from various aviation models while continuing to expand into new markets within an evolving industry landscape.
