United Airlines has been expanding its fleet with the addition of Airbus A321neo aircraft. The airline now possesses 25 of these next-generation models, and recently one was observed on a flight to Hawaii. This could potentially be a proving flight for future routes using this type of aircraft.

The introduction of the A321neo is part of United's strategy to modernize its fleet with more efficient and environmentally friendly planes. The first A321neos joined the fleet in December 2023, and since then, 25 have been delivered.

Flight tracking data from Flightradar24 revealed that a model registered as N14506 flew from California to Hawaii on a non-commercial flight. This aircraft had previously been grounded due to an issue with elevated VHF radio static. The plane's journey suggests it might be undergoing Extended Range Twin-engine Operational Performance Standards (ETOPS) testing. ETOPS certification is crucial for planes operating over-water corridors or other long-distance routes without immediate access to diversion airports.

A United Airlines spokesperson was not available for comment regarding the purpose of the flight. However, evidence from flight tracking data and the absence of passengers suggest it was likely a proving flight for the new aircraft.

The Airbus A321neo involved in this operation was part of an order made by United Airlines in 2021. It took its maiden voyage on February 28th, 2024, and joined United's fleet on March 12th. Since then, it has operated flights from Chicago to various domestic destinations like New York, Boston, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas.

On December 9th, the plane traveled from Chicago to Portland and back before heading to San Francisco overnight. It departed San Francisco at 12:40 the following day and reached Honolulu after a journey lasting over five hours. The return trip left Honolulu at 10:27 AM and arrived back in San Francisco later that afternoon before returning to Chicago.

Flying A321neos to Hawaii isn't new among U.S carriers; Delta Air Lines currently schedules similar flights on several Hawaiian routes this month according to Cirium data. American Airlines also operates its A321neos on routes between Los Angeles or Phoenix and various Hawaiian destinations this month as well.
