In the competitive transatlantic aviation market, Virgin Atlantic continues to be a significant player. Celebrating 40 years since its inaugural Boeing 747 flight from London Gatwick to Newark Liberty International Airport, the airline has expanded its presence significantly on US-bound routes.

This December marks a busy period for Virgin Atlantic, with more than 1,000 flights scheduled on US routes. According to Cirium data, the airline has planned 1,174 services between the UK and the US. These flights offer a total of 327,768 seats and cover 1,376,281,298 available seat miles (ASMs).

Virgin Atlantic is using various aircraft types for these flights. The Airbus A330-900neo is prominent among them with 357 flights and 93,534 seats. It accounts for over 30% of both flights and seats on Virgin's US routes this Christmas season.

One of Virgin's busiest routes is between London Heathrow and New York JFK. The airline has scheduled 150 flights each way in December with an average of about five round trips daily. This route offers a total of over 90,000 seats during the month.

The second-busiest route by seat availability is London Heathrow to Los Angeles International Airport. Virgin Atlantic plans twice-daily services on most days except Christmas Eve when only one round trip will occur.

London Heathrow to Miami ranks third with Virgin operating twice-daily services dropping to once daily on December 24th and 25th. This corridor sees competition from American Airlines and British Airways.

Virgin also serves Atlanta with daily flights from London Heathrow using the A350-1000 aircraft exclusively. The route offers more than 10,000 seats each way this month.

Rounding out the top five is Orlando International Airport served from both London Heathrow and Manchester airports. Each facility offers daily round trips contributing equally to the total seat count.

Virgin Atlantic continues competing with other major carriers like British Airways and Delta Air Lines across these corridors while expanding its service options for travelers during peak travel seasons like December.
