Los Angeles is preparing for the 2028 Summer Olympics, with a focus on enhancing its transportation infrastructure to accommodate the influx of visitors. Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), which handled over 75 million passengers in 2023, is central to these preparations. With millions expected during the Olympics, upgrades are underway to ensure efficient transit.

Kim Parker Gordon, spokesperson for the LA Olympic and Paralympic Games, stated that "LA28 will be a transit-first Games," encouraging public transport use. Marlon Boarnet from the University of Southern California emphasized the dual benefits of such investments: handling the event's demands and providing lasting infrastructure improvements.

Mayor Karen Bass highlighted efforts to make games accessible via public transportation, stressing coordination across jurisdictions. Significant enhancements have been made since 1984, but further upgrades are needed.

The Automated People Mover (APM) train system is pivotal in these plans. This electric train system connects LAX terminals with key facilities and offers reliable transit options. According to Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), it features a "2.25-mile elevated guideway with six stations" and operates continuously for passengers and airport employees.

The APM project has generated significant local employment and economic activity. LAWA notes it as "a historic investment" in local businesses and workforce development.

Another major project is the Consolidated Rent-A-Car Facility (ConRAC), which aims to streamline rental car operations at LAX. It reduces traffic congestion by consolidating services into one location linked to the APM system. The facility will include extensive parking and vehicle maintenance capabilities.

According to LAWA, ConRAC will provide "seamless travel between car rental options and LAX’s terminals." The project has already created thousands of jobs and incorporated sustainable practices.

Both projects represent substantial investments aimed at improving LAX's capacity and efficiency ahead of the 2028 Olympics while contributing long-term benefits to Los Angeles' infrastructure.
