During the Cold War, the Soviet Union was a significant producer of military transport aircraft, with Antonov and Ilyushin leading in this field. However, today, these manufacturers have largely disappeared from the export market. The inventories of many Soviet-aligned air forces still include Soviet-produced transports, but most were built before or shortly after the USSR's collapse. Despite this, Russia remains the second-largest operator of military transports globally.

Currently, countries purchasing new military transport aircraft are opting for models from Europe, the United States, Brazil, and China. Ukraine's Antonov and Russia's Ilyushin are notably absent from recent order books. A range of military transport aircraft is in production worldwide, including the Ilyushin Il-76 from Russia and various models from China based on Soviet designs.

Kazakhstan recently acquired its first Airbus A400M airlifter while also ordering Chinese Shaanxi Y-8 transports. India is replacing its old Soviet transports with EADS CASA C-295s and plans to produce C130J Super Hercules under license.

Due to ongoing conflict, Ukraine's Antonov is unlikely to produce large transports soon. Some Antonov models continue production as licensed variants in China. The An-225 Mriya's destruction has left the An-124 Ruslan as the largest transport aircraft globally; its production ended in 1994.

Ilyushin continues producing new military transport aircraft like the Il-76MD-90A. In 2023, United Aircraft Corporation delivered six contracted Il-76MD-90As to Russia's military. Production faces challenges due to labor shortages exacerbated by Russia's wartime economy.

Russia's aviation industry struggles under international sanctions impacting both military and civilian sectors. Since December 2024, only seven Sukhoi Superjets have been produced using pre-sanction stock. Plans for new passenger aircraft remain unfulfilled due to reliance on foreign parts.

"The exact cost of the new An-225 has not yet been determined," reported Ukrainska Pravda regarding Antonov's paused reconstruction efforts.

"These are the long-range Il-96-300 and medium-range Tu-214," noted BBC Russia about outdated Russian projects forced back into production due to necessity.
