An American Airlines flight traveling from Charlotte, North Carolina, to London Heathrow was diverted to New York due to a navigation system issue. The Boeing 777-200ER landed safely at John F. Kennedy International Airport without any reported injuries.

The incident occurred on December 13 when the aircraft reached its cruising altitude of 35,000 feet. According to The Aviation Herald, the pilots informed air traffic control about the failure of their redundant navigation systems while the plane was "about 110nm south-southeast of New York." Initially considering a return to Charlotte, the crew decided to divert to New York after consulting with dispatch.

The diversion resulted in significant delays for passengers, who were later accommodated on another flight to London. American Airlines has been contacted for comments regarding the situation.

Flight AA732 is a scheduled service that departs from Charlotte at 20:20 and arrives in London at 09:15, typically taking around seven and a half hours. The aircraft involved in this incident, registered as N750AN, is a Boeing 777-200ER delivered to American Airlines in March 2001. It has accumulated over 90,000 flight hours across more than 11,600 cycles.

Flight diversions can occur for various reasons beyond navigation issues. On December 1, a Gulf Air Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner had to divert due to an engine fire. Similarly, other flights have been diverted due to hydraulic failures or flap issues. Not all diversions are technical; for instance, on November 27, a Delta Air Lines flight was diverted because of an unruly passenger.

Diversions remain a part of aviation operations and can arise from both mechanical and non-mechanical causes.
