American Airlines is gearing up for a busy winter holiday travel season, anticipating over 12.7 million passengers and more than 118,000 flights from December 18, 2024, to January 6, 2025. The airline expects December 27 and December 20 to be the peak travel days. On December 22 at 12:40 CT (18:40 UTC), American Airlines will have a significant number of aircraft in the air simultaneously.

The airline demonstrated strong operational performance during Thanksgiving by canceling fewer mainline flights than other major US carriers. American Airlines has also prepared its de-icing teams at various airports to handle potential weather disruptions.

David Seymour, Chief Operating Officer of American Airlines, stated: “American delivered industry-leading operational performance over Thanksgiving, and I’d like to thank our team members for their hard work in safely caring for our customers. We look forward to continuing that momentum as millions once again take to the skies for holiday gatherings and winter vacations.”

For the upcoming holiday period, American Airlines plans to serve approximately 6.6 million bags of pretzels and fly over 102 million miles collectively with its fleet. Last year during this time, passengers watched nearly 20 million minutes of holiday-themed content onboard.

Throughout the year, American Airlines operated more than 2.1 million flights with over 275 million seats available across a network spanning over 350 destinations in more than 60 countries.

Looking forward to next year, the airline plans significant expansion with over 20 new routes from US hubs and transatlantic services including Charlotte-Athens and Chicago-Madrid among others.

Currently operating a fleet of nearly a thousand aircraft averaging an age of about thirteen years, American Airlines expects further growth with new additions such as Airbus A321XLRs and Boeing models scheduled for delivery in coming years.
