The RQ-170 Sentinel, also known as the "Wraith," is a stealthy drone used by the United States Air Force for reconnaissance missions. Although its existence is acknowledged, details about this aircraft remain largely undisclosed. The Air Force describes it as "a low observable unmanned aircraft system (UAS) being developed, tested and fielded by the Air Force. It will provide reconnaissance and surveillance in support of the joint forces commander."

This stealth drone plays a critical role in intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), filling gaps left by manned aircraft such as the retired SR-71 Blackbird and the U-2 Dragon Lady, which cannot operate effectively in contested airspace. The MQ-9 Reaper drone faces similar limitations due to its high cost and vulnerability.

Despite its secrecy, some information about the RQ-170 has surfaced. Developed by Lockheed Martin's Skunk Works, it reportedly began operations around 2005 with a design reminiscent of a flying wing shape. It was involved in significant operations like the 2011 mission targeting Osama bin Laden.

The Air Force states that "the RQ-170 is flown by Air Combat Command's 432nd Wing at Creech Air Force Base, Nevada, and the 30th Reconnaissance Squadron at Tonopah Test Range, Nevada." However, they have not disclosed specifics regarding its service history or deployment locations.

In 2011, Iran claimed to have captured an RQ-170 intact after allegedly jamming its controls over Iranian territory. While US Defense officials disputed these claims, acknowledging only that an RQ-170 was lost in Afghanistan around that time. Iran later claimed to reverse-engineer this technology into their Saegheh drone model.

The cost of each RQ-170 unit could be approximately $6 million according to Christian Science Monitor reports—a figure suggesting that while capable, it might not incorporate America's most cutting-edge technology. The Times of Israel reported that Iran’s Saeqeh design mimics elements from an American RQ-170 Sentinel captured in 2011.
