As US airports become more crowded, particularly during peak travel times, many passengers are turning to TSA PreCheck to reduce waiting times. However, the initial enrollment process for this program has become a target for scammers who create fake websites to deceive applicants.

The popularity of the TSA PreCheck program among frequent travelers has led scammers to exploit the demand by creating convincing fake websites. Karin Zilberstein from Guardio, a browser extension that detects fake sites and malware, explained to ABC 11: “We are seeing a disturbing trend of mimicking TSA-like sites. The quality of the sites, obviously, scammers are getting better, using generative AI in producing more and more realistic sites.”

Zilberstein advises caution when navigating online, especially regarding links claiming affiliation with TSA. She warns against "malvertising," or advertising purchased for malicious purposes.

Enrollment costs for TSA PreCheck range from $77.95 to $85 over five years. Beyond financial loss, personal information such as bank details is also at risk from these scams.

To ensure security while enrolling in TSA PreCheck, Zilberstein suggests visiting official government websites ending in .gov and checking for secure site indicators like HTTPS and lock symbols.

The holiday season sees increased online scamming activity as people share travel plans on social media—potentially making them targets for fraudsters.

In recent months, record numbers of passengers have passed through US airports. December 1st marked an all-time high with over 3.09 million passengers screened by the TSA—a trend expected to continue throughout the Christmas period despite complaints about delays even among PreCheck members.
