The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has revised the type certificate data sheet for the Boeing 787-9, increasing its maximum taxi weight (MTW) and maximum takeoff weight (MTOW). The update, effective since December 17, follows approval number 10084536, which has been active since May 22.

According to EASA, the updated MTW is now 563,000 pounds (255,372 kilograms), while the MTOW is set at 561,500 pounds (254,692 kilograms). These increases apply to aircraft equipped with specific Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 and GE Aerospace GEnx engines with thrust ratings of either 74,000 or 75,000. However, EASA noted that actual maximum weights might be lower due to factors such as center of gravity and fuel limitations as outlined in the approved Airplane Flight Manual.

The changes do not affect other weight limits like maximum landing weight and zero fuel weight. Meanwhile, the Federal Aviation Administration's type certificate for the Boeing 787 has not yet been updated since August. The FAA refers to its approved Airplane Flight Manual for determining maximum weights.

Previously archived data from April 2022 showed that the MTW and MTOW were slightly lower than current figures. Boeing has reportedly been working on increased gross weight variants of both the 787-9 and 787-10 models.

In terms of engine upgrades, Rolls-Royce announced a new durability enhancement package for its Trent 1000 engines in December last year. This package aims to improve time-on-wing by re-engineering high-pressure turbine blades. Rolls-Royce plans to have this upgrade available by early 2025.

Rolls-Royce also reported that their durability enhancement package has performed well on their Trent 7000 engines used in Airbus A330neo aircraft. The second phase of this package is expected by 2026.
