Travelers in North Queensland are celebrating the return of Cathay Pacific's seasonal flights to Hong Kong. The airline will operate its Airbus A330-300 three times a week between December 17 and March 29, 2025.

Cairns International Airport is welcoming this addition as it strengthens its position as a gateway to international tourism. Richard Barker, the airport's Chief Executive Officer, expressed excitement about reestablishing the partnership with Cathay Pacific. "Just over a year ago, a delegation from Tropical North Queensland visited Cathay Pacific in Hong Kong to discuss the road to their return. Now, we are celebrating the vital first step in reestablishing our long-running partnership. We are thrilled to welcome Cathay Pacific back to Tropical North Queensland."

The schedule includes flight CX147 departing Hong Kong at 01:05 and arriving in Cairns at 10:30, with the return flight CX146 leaving Cairns at 12:00 and reaching Hong Kong by 17:15. These flights will run on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

Passengers on the inaugural flight received a warm welcome with traditional water cannon salutes and Chinese lion dances at the terminal. Barker highlighted that "delivering almost 27,000 seats across the season on the A330 aircraft, these services come at an ideal time for passengers travelling overseas for Christmas and summer holidays."

Cathay Pacific's timing allows travelers from Cairns easy connections through Hong Kong to over 80 international destinations, including Mainland China, Europe, and other parts of Asia.

Cairns Airport continues to expand its network of domestic and international services without direct competition on this route. Other airlines operating from Cairns include Air New Zealand, Air Niugini, China Eastern Airlines, Fiji Airways starting April 10 next year, Indonesia AirAsia, Jetstar, Singapore Airlines, and Virgin Australia.
