The MQ-25 Stingray, a carrier-based unmanned aircraft, is set to enhance the capabilities of US Navy aircraft carriers by providing robust aerial refueling. This innovation marks the first instance of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) being used for such a purpose. "We also have built into the aeroplane contingency management," said Jim Young, Executive Program Director at Boeing.

The primary mission of the MQ-25 is to extend the strike range of carrier air wings by relieving combat aircraft from refueling duties. It will play a key role in developing manned-unmanned teaming concepts and improving carrier strike group capabilities. The drone is fully autonomous and executes missions based on preloaded plans.

Boeing demonstrated its technology's maturity in May 2024 with simulations allowing remote command of the MQ-25 for refueling operations. The company has been contracted by the US Navy to develop this UAV, aiming to purchase over 70 units after initial production.

Challenges remain as a November 2023 audit reported insufficient testing and operational requirement fulfillment risks. "The audit underscores the risks associated with premature decision-making," noted Robert P. Storch, Inspector General. Consequently, deployment has been delayed until 2026.

Several companies are collaborating on this project, including BAE Systems and Collins Aerospace. The latter developed a navigation system ensuring precise landing guidance on carriers.

With safety concerns addressed through comprehensive testing and advanced technologies incorporated into its design, the MQ-25 aims to revolutionize aerial refueling processes across military operations.
