An Army veteran transformed a delayed Delta Air Lines flight into a memorable event with an impromptu saxophone performance. Wayne Hoey, who served over 20 years in the US Army Band, was on his way back to Augusta, Georgia, from Detroit when his connecting flight was delayed at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

As passengers grew restless due to the delay caused by a replacement crew stuck in traffic, Hoey offered to play Christmas carols to ease the tension. With approval from the flight crew, he performed holiday classics like “Jingle Bells” and “Silent Night,” engaging passengers who clapped and sang along.

Hoey shared with CNN: "I asked her, ‘Ma’am, would you like me to play a few tunes on my saxophone? I think I can get them to quiet down.'"

His performance included songs for children such as “Baby Shark” and his favorite Christmas song, “Mary, Did You Know?” Passenger Kate Dailey posted a video of the event on Facebook, noting how it improved the mood onboard. Her post went viral, highlighting the positive impact of Hoey's actions.

According to Miami Daily Life, Hoey often performs impromptu concerts and was surprised by the video's popularity. He continues this tradition that began during his military service.

Delta Air Lines expressed gratitude for Hoey's contribution. A spokesperson told CNN: "While Delta’s in-flight entertainment system offers hundreds of options to engage our customers, we thank him for providing this lighthearted moment as well as his service to our country."

Hoey's passion for music extends beyond performances; he occasionally teaches music at local schools in Augusta after retiring from teaching in Colorado.
