Lufthansa Group has expanded its order of Airbus A350-1000 aircraft, adding five more to its previous commitments. This brings the total number of A350-1000s on order to 15. The company did not specify which airline within the group would receive these new aircraft. Currently, Lufthansa, ITA Airways, Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS), and Edelweiss Air operate or are awaiting delivery of A350-900 aircraft.

With this latest acquisition, Lufthansa Group's total order for the A350 family reaches 75 aircraft, comprising 60 A350-900s and 15 A350-1000s. Deliveries of the newly ordered planes are expected between 2028 and 2030. Meanwhile, deliveries from a previous order made in March 2023 will commence in April 2026.

Carsten Sphor, Chairman and CEO of Lufthansa Group, stated that the order highlights their confidence in Airbus as a partner: “We are investing more than ever before in our history to make air transport more sustainable, to achieve our CO₂ reduction targets and at the same time offer our customers the highest level of comfort with a first-class travel experience.”

The addition of these orders makes Lufthansa Group Airbus' largest customer worldwide. "With the upcoming integration of ITA Airways in January," Sphor added, "the Airbus fleet of Lufthansa Group Airlines will grow by another 100 short- and long-haul aircraft."

Lufthansa Group currently operates approximately 740 commercial aircraft but is pursuing a strategy focused on quality, cost efficiency, and sustainability. The group plans to replace older four-engine models like the Boeing 747-400 and Airbus A340 series with newer twin-engine jets.

As part of its ongoing fleet expansion efforts, SWISS plans to double its incoming A350-900 fleet from five to ten aircraft by summer 2025. Similarly, Edelweiss Air anticipates integrating its first A350-900 into its fleet by spring 2025.

The popularity of the A350-1000 model has increased throughout 2024. At the end of November, Airbus reported securing a total of 1,290 gross orders for its A350 family—76.5% for the A350-900 model and 23.4% for the A350-1000.

Airbus continues to announce new orders across various airlines; China Airlines recently purchased ten A350-1000s on December 20th as part of broader acquisitions involving both Boeing and Airbus widebodies.
