On December 18, Turkish Airlines inaugurated its new third-longest route from Istanbul to Santiago de Chile, with a stopover in São Paulo. Earlier this year, the airline began flights to Melbourne via Singapore in March and launched Sydney flights via Kuala Lumpur in November. Sydney is currently its longest service.

Turkish Airlines' CEO revealed during the Sydney launch that some of the incoming 15 Airbus A350-1000s will be reconfigured for nonstop Australian routes. The aircraft will feature a new 322-ton MTOW version. While specific details remain undisclosed, there will likely be around 270 seats configured for these long-haul flights. Nonstop services to cities like Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth are anticipated. Auckland is also on the agenda, which could potentially become the world's longest nonstop route if realized.

The airline announced its intention to fly to Santiago back in July and confirmed it in September, giving it only two months to promote awareness and sales. The first flight took place on December 18 using a Boeing 777-300ER.

Santiago becomes Turkish Airlines' fifth South American destination after Bogotá, Caracas, Buenos Aires, and São Paulo. A sixth destination in Lima is expected by 2025. In total, Turkish Airlines now serves nine airports across Latin America.

The demand for direct travel between Santiago and Istanbul is limited to approximately 9,000 passengers annually. However, other significant markets include Santiago-Rome with 39,000 roundtrip passengers annually and Santiago-Shanghai with 25,000 passengers.

The airline's five longest routes include Istanbul-Kuala Lumpur-Sydney at 8,082 nautical miles (14,968 km) with a maximum block time of 21 hours and 35 minutes; Istanbul-Singapore-Melbourne at 7,940 nautical miles (14,705 km) with a block time of 21 hours and five minutes; Istanbul-São Paulo-Santiago de Chile at 7,107 nautical miles (13,162 km) taking up to 19 hours and ten minutes; Istanbul-São Paulo-Buenos Aires at 6,623 nautical miles (12,266 km); and Istanbul-Mexico City outbound/Mexico City-Cancun-Istanbul inbound at 6,337 nautical miles (11,736 km).
