OAG announces busiest airline routes worldwide for 2024

OAG has released its latest data on the busiest airline routes for 2024. The Hong Kong to Taipei route is the busiest international route, with 6.8 million seats. This marks a return to its top position last held in 2019, following a 48% increase in capacity over the past year. However, it remains 15% below pre-pandemic levels.

The second-busiest international route is Cairo to Jeddah, which recorded 5.5 million seats, showing a growth of 14% from 2023 and a significant rise of 62% from 2019. Seoul Incheon to Tokyo Narita ranks third with 5.4 million seats, marking a substantial increase of 30% over the previous year and a notable rise of 68% compared to five years ago.

Kuala Lumpur to Singapore Changi, previously the busiest route in 2023, now ranks fourth with an increase of 10% from last year and just slightly below its pre-pandemic level by only 3%.

Seven out of the top ten busiest international routes are located in Asia, indicating strong recovery and growth in this region post-pandemic.

The report also details the busiest international airline routes by region for the year:

- Africa: Cairo to Jeddah with over five million seats.

- Asia Pacific: Hong Kong to Taipei leading with nearly seven million seats.

- Europe: New York JFK to London Heathrow featuring four million seats.

- Latin America: Orlando to San Juan at approximately two million seats.

- Middle East: Again Cairo to Jeddah leads here as well.

- North America: New York JFK to London Heathrow also features prominently.

In terms of domestic travel, Jeju to Seoul Gimpo remains the world's busiest domestic route with over fourteen million seats despite being below its peak levels from before the pandemic.

Other notable domestic routes include:

- Chitose to Tokyo Haneda at nearly twelve million seats.

- Fukuoka to Tokyo Haneda at eleven million.

- Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City recording ten point six million seats.

- Melbourne to Sydney at nine point two million.

Within the United States, Atlanta to Orlando is noted as having three point five million seats followed closely by Honolulu-Kahului and Las Vegas-Los Angeles routes.
