British Airways has announced the suspension of its summer flights between London Heathrow and Abu Dhabi due to ongoing issues with Boeing 787 Dreamliner engines. The decision comes after the airline resumed operations on this route earlier in the year, following a four-year hiatus.

The primary reason for the disruption is delays in receiving Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines and parts. This issue was first reported by Reuters. A British Airways spokesperson expressed disappointment, stating, "We're disappointed that we've had to make further changes to our schedule as we continue to experience delays to the delivery of engines and parts from Rolls-Royce – particularly concerning the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines fitted to our 787 aircraft."

This is not an isolated incident for British Airways, which has previously faced similar challenges with engine part shortages affecting its Airbus A380 aircraft. The airline had already reduced long-haul flights this summer due to these delays. It acknowledged that it does not "believe the issue will be solved quickly," emphasizing its commitment to providing certainty for customers' travel plans.

British Airways operates a fleet of 41 Boeing 787 Dreamliners and is awaiting delivery of seven more 787-10 aircraft, which may also be impacted by these engine issues. The airline continues to work closely with Rolls-Royce, seeking reassurance for a prompt solution.

Rolls-Royce attributed the delays to industry-wide supply chain constraints exacerbated by geopolitical tensions such as Russia's invasion of Ukraine impacting titanium supplies. A spokesperson stated, “This is due to the current challenging industry wide supply chain constraints. We continue to work with all our customers to minimise the impact of the limited availability of spares parts."

In response to the flight cancellations, British Airways offers passengers same-day rebooking options or full refunds. Other airlines like Etihad Airways provide alternative direct flights between London Heathrow and Abu Dhabi International Airport.
